Company History

Production of rolls began at Vanderbijlpark VECOR foundry shortly after the company was founded in 1947. Rolls were manufactured mainly to service the growing steel industry of South Africa at that time. In 1974 the DORBYL group of companies was established and VECOR became part of DORBYL’s heavy engineering division.

Steady growth prompted DORBYL to invest in a specialized roll facility in 1975 which resulted in the construction of a modern roll Foundry and Machine shop as it exists today. From 1991 rolls were manufactured and traded worldwide under the name of DORBYL ROLL WORKS.

UNITED FOUNDRIES, a well-known international roll supplier, acquired the Dorbyl Roll Works from Dorbyl Limited in 1998. This has resulted in the creation of the SOUTH AFRICAN ROLL COMPANY (PTY) LTD (SARCO).

During December 2008, United Foundries sold SARCO to a shareholding group comprised of Nedbank Capital Private Equity, Medu Capital and Management.

In 2016, the general engineering ferrous castings division was established to service the local and international heavy engineering sector.

A combination of sophisticated equipment, latest technology, together with skills and experience acquired through nearly half a century in the business, position us amongst the world leading roll manufactures currently available to the steel industry.
